Tape Measures

A tape measure, commonly referred to as a measuring tape, is a flexible hand tool used to measure materials, objects and distances in both professional and DIY settings. Measuring tapes typically carry both metric (centimetres and metres) and imperial (inches and feet) markings along a coated steel, fibreglass or fabric blade, which allows the tape to flex around corners and curves and roll back into a compact case. Types of Measuring Tapes

Different measuring jobs call for different tape designs. The five variants below cover the main types stocked at RS Hong Kong, from retractable pocket tapes for everyday work through to long fibreglass tapes for site setting-out, and the metric and imperial markings each one carries.

Retractable Measuring Tapes

Retractable measuring tapes are the pocket-sized workhorse of any toolbox: a spring-loaded steel blade retracts into a compact case between measurements, with a lock to hold the blade in place while a reading is taken. Blade widths of 19 mm, 25 mm and 32 mm are the most common on a retractable tape, with wider blades holding their stand-out (how far the blade can extend unsupported) further for solo work.

Long Measuring Tapes

Long measuring tapes extend from 20 metres up to 100 metres and sit in an open or closed-case drum, wound back by a hand crank. These are the tape of choice for site setting-out, long-run checks and surveying work, where the pocket retractable tape would simply run out of blade. Fibreglass Measuring Tapes

Fibreglass measuring tape blades resist stretching under normal field tension and shrug off moisture, chemicals and rough handling better than steel. These suit outdoor surveying, landscaping and site work in Hong Kong's humidity and rain, and they are also safer than steel tapes around electrical installations where a conductive blade would be a hazard.

Metric Tape Measure

Metric tape measures are marked in the metric system of metres, centimetres and millimetres. A metre has 10 decimetres, a decimetre has 10 centimetres, and a centimetre has 10 millimetres. Metric is the standard measurement system across the Hong Kong construction and engineering industries, so a metric-only tape is often the right choice for professional work; dual-marked tapes add imperial on the opposite edge for jobs that still call for inches.

Imperial Tape Measure

Imperial tape measures are marked in feet and inches, with each inch divided into 16 or 32 fractions and twelve inches making one foot. Imperial-marked tapes remain common on jobs that interface with American or legacy specifications, and dual-marked tapes carry both scales so the user can switch between the two on the same reading.

Construction & Site Setting Out

On a construction site, measuring tapes handle everything from marking out stud spacing and door openings through to setting out foundation lines with a 30 or 50 metre long tape. For long distances a laser alternative is often faster, and for precise checks of smaller components, hand tools such as rulers and callipers take over where the tape's accuracy runs out.

Carpentry & Joinery

Carpenters and joiners reach for a 5 or 8 metre retractable tape for day-to-day work: marking out timber, checking stud and joist spacing, and transferring dimensions between workpieces. A tape with a strong magnet on the hook and a long stand-out makes solo marking much faster, and sits alongside spirit levels and inclinometers in the standard joinery kit.
