Magnifying glasses are devices typically used as vision aids that allow you to enlarge the apparent size of something and see it in greater detail and resolution. They feature a rounded convex lens, with light bending and converging at a focal point. Most are small and portable and designed for short-term uses such as reading small print.

How is the power of magnifying glasses measured?

You may see the power of a magnifying glass measured in multiple ways. The most common is ’times magnification’, which describes the number of times larger an object will appear when viewed through the device e.g. a 5x magnifying glass.

Dioptre is another method of measuring a device’s magnifying power. Also known as diopter, this is the measurement of the lens’ ability to bend light over its surface and is a power increase of 25% so 3 dioptres = 1.75x magnification and 5 dioptres = 2.25x.

What are the different types of magnifying glasses?

Magnifying glasses come in all shapes and sizes. Common types include handheld magnifiers, bench magnifiers and surface contact magnifiers.

Handheld magnifiers typically have a handle attached to the lens, allowing you to easily move the device closer or further away from your eyes or an object. This type is the most basic and instantly recognisable.

Bench magnifiers are designed to be placed on or attached to a surface, with an adjustable arm allowing you to move the position of the lens while keeping your arms free. They’re commonly used by dentists and jewellers, and can also be used for inspecting electronics and mechanical parts.

Surface contact magnifiers are small devices without a handle or arm that can be placed directly onto a surface. They’re commonly used in jewellery, watchmaking, photography, among many other industries.

Where are magnifying glasses used?

Magnifying glasses are used in a range of industries including jewellery, science and electronics. A jeweller’s magnifying glass will be used to inspect the quality of gemstones for example, whereas an electronics service engineer may use a magnifying glass to check for faults on an electrical circuit.
