Laser Levels

Laser levels are control tools consisting of a pendulum or spirit level and a laser for projecting a level line on a horizontal or vertical plane over a set distance. They’re useful for transferring a level from one surface to another, and can eliminate human error in professional and DIY applications. Commonly affixed to a tripod in surveying and construction.

What are the different types of laser levels?

The main types are:

Line laser level: A point-to-point level that projects a visible line onto a surface. Designed primarily for indoor use for levelling floors, aligning shelving and trim and checking the height of doors and windows, they often include plumb up and plumb down capabilities.

Dot laser level: Instead of a line, a simple point is projected that can be level, square or plumb. Different models can project dots at 2 points for verticals, 3 points for verticals plus horizontal or 5 points for verticals, horizontals and 45° in-between. They’re well-suited to laying out right angles, as well as general levelling applications.

Rotary laser level: These lasers use a prism driven by a small motor to produce a 360° laser line over long distances. They’re generally designed for creating horizontal lines but some can also work vertically. Ideal for outdoor surveyance work in tandem with a tripod, these are the most accurate laser levels.

Manual or self-levelling laser levels

Traditional manual laser levels work by lining up a bubble inside a vial by repositioning the level or turning a knob. Ideal for DIY projects such as hanging photo frames, manual laser levels are less expensive and use less battery power than self-levelling units.

Self-levelling units however offer a greater degree of accuracy, which can be crucial in professional applications such as construction. They work best when placed on a surface that the user determines is "close to level." You can use a bubble vial to manually level the unit before its self-levelling mechanism takes over. The laser component hangs like a pendulum inside the level, while magnets and gravity work together to still the pendulum before the laser beam is projected through a light or prism.
