Discover IOT2020
The IOT2020 gateway is compatible with most Arduino sketches that can be uploaded directly from the Arduino IDE. Many other programs can be compiled and/or run under Yocto Linux thanks to the X1000 SOC (X86) controller. Third-party hardware, such as PLCs and sensors from various different brands, can be integrated via Ethernet or Serial (USB adapter needed) by using open or indudustrial protocols like Modbus, Profinet, REST and MQTT.The IOT2020 is compatible with Arduino shields and various high level programming languages such as Java, C++ and Python or via a range of IDEs that includes Eclipse and Yocto Linux compilers. It is also expandable thanks to the on-board mPCIe port. Node-Red, MQTT and SQLITE3 can be used to connect and control local and remote peripherals.
What is SIMATIC IOT2020?
SIMATIC IOT2020, the open industrial IOT gateway aims to support students, makers, and young developers to get familiarized with the IIoT and scale up their prototypes developed with open source boards like Arduino, Intel Galileo or Raspberry PI.
IOT2020 is not a logic controller, it has been developed to be the brain of an IoT application by collecting data from PLCs, drives or sensors located everywhere in the world. In the case IOs are required users have on-board options by using the Arduino connectors or many of the existing Arduino shields.
What does it mean that SIMATIC IOT2020 is an “Industrial hardware”? What is the difference with the regular development boards such as Arduino?
UL/CE certification is only one of the many requirements that make IOT2020 a suitable hardware for industrial applications. IOT2020 is developed with an industrial IP20 housing that allows a secure installation within machineries and electrical panels and an easy connection with other DIN rail industrial devices such as PLCs, power supplies, relays or inverter drives.
Moreover, IOT2020 is built with industrial grade components for continuous operation in industrial environments with vibrations, dust, high temperatures and electromagnetic interferences.
Regarding communication protocols, IOT2020 can communicate with other industrial hardware by using secure industrial protocols such as Modbus, PROFINET and MQTT.
The typical open source development boards are usually not developed for continuous operation in an industrial environment and are not designed to be easily interfaced with other industrial devices.
Why do students and makers need an industrial grade and certified hardware?
An industrial grade and certified hardware is mandatory for the students who want to integrate their IOT projects into an existing industrial system (e.g. prototype a new remote monitoring system to control an existing industrial robot arm). Students can start prototyping at the desk with Arduino boards as usual and then simply transfer the code - and the Arduino shields, if needed - into the IOT2020 to complete the integration to an existing industrial system.
Makers and start-ups can use IOT2020 to scale up their IoT prototypes to commercial applications by leveraging its industrial certifications and by simply migrating the vast majority of the code, developed for the Arduino based boards during the prototyping phase, into it.
