Resistor Spacers

Resistor spacers, also called standoffs, are used to separate resistors from a printed circuit board (PCB) to protect the PCB if the resistor gets hot during use. They can also serve as dividers between resistors.

Spacers are made from either polyamide or ceramic. Those manufactured via injection moulding processes have high levels of tensile strength. This means they are robust and durable enough to withstand the extreme heat generated by some resistors.

What are resistor spacers used for?

The primary use of a resistor spacer is to provide a barrier between a hot resistor and the PCB. They are typical components of electronics assemblies or applications where mechanical support and insulation are required.

Resistor spacers with surface mount features are commonly found in industrial and commercial environments like fire and security, as well as building controls. They allow for multiple PCBs to be stacked on top of one another in these types of situations.
