GPS Modems

GPS modems are hardware devices that use the Global Positioning System (GPS) to provide satellite data connectivity and get data about an asset, such as its location.

How do GPS modems work?

A GPS modem installed in a vehicle, for example, provides a wireless network connection for portable computers installed in the car. The network connectivity may be used to browse the internet, access shared data, and send and recover text messages and email.

GPS modems can be used together with GSM modems in vehicle tracking systems. The GPS modem can track the location of the car in terms of latitude and longitude and feed it to a Microcontroller. The Microcontroller can then save the details and send them to authorities in the form of a text message over GSM (Global System for Mobile communications).

GPS modems are usually designed to withstand shock, vibration, humidity and temperature extremes experienced in normal operations of field service, utility, emergency and police vehicles.
