Mild steel is defined as steel that contains a relatively low percentage of carbon, and is thus more accurately referred to as ’low-carbon steel’. The required range of carbon content for a product to classify as mild steel is between 0.05-0.25%, whereas other higher-carbon steels (which is harder, and therefore more often used for knives and cutting tools) can contain up to 2% carbon.

Mild steel is prized for being more ductile, machinable and weldable than other, higher-carbon and stainless steels, although it typically has lower overall tensile strength than most alloyed steels.
  • Mild steel sheets and perforated steel sheets are widely used in industries such as food and beverage production, aerospace and automobile engineering, in various DIY applications, or for furniture design/making and general decor around the home.
    • Mild steel sheet is weldable and easy to hand-cut or drill at thinner gauges, while thicker sheets may require machinery or tooling
    • Tin plating on the sheets can offer protection from corrosion and chemicals over time

    • When buying tubular lengths online, be aware that diameter refers to the overall size of a tube, while thickness denotes the width of the tube wall - an important parameter when planning to feed cables or other materials through a steel tube length.

  • Mild steel angles are L-shaped beams bent at 90 degrees, for easy affixing to other materials in framing and structural support roles for walls, ceilings and other internal/external loads.
Mild steel is used in some structural applications, as well as being very widely found in sign-making,, furniture and interior design applications, wiring and fastener manufacture, vehicle manufacture/repair, and fencing.

Due to its lower percentage of alloying elements than, for example, stainless steel, the iron component in mild steel is prone to oxidation and corrosion if not properly coated for use in more challenging environments and conditions.
